The Israel National Team’s greatest hopes always rest squarely on the shoulders of the country’s most prized footballing asset – Yossi Benayoun.

So football fans all across the small Mediterranean nation will be reeling after breaking news emerging today that Israel’s captain, Benayoun, faces a few weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring tear.

Benayoun, Liverpool’s player of the month for February, suffered the torn hamstring in training and is now doubtful for Israel’s crucial World Cup qualifiers against Greece at the end of the month.

After heading in the winning goal against Real Madrid in the Champions League less than two weeks ago, Benayoun will have to adjust his status from “hero” to “hospital patient,” surely a devastating mental blow to the in-form star. For Israel’s sake, let’s hope the recovery is quick.
