The Curious Case of Ben Sahar: The “Next Benayoun” Looks for a New Home…

May 12th, 2009 | By: Ibracadabra | No Comments »

Only three years ago, Israeli international Ben Sahar was the “next big thing.” Hapoel Tel Aviv sold the young stud to Chelsea for £320,000 and in 2007, at only seventeen, he made his Premier League debut – coming on as a substitute for Arjen Robben.

Oh, how the mighty Israeli has fallen…

Israel’s youngest ever goalscorer was never given much of a chance at Stamford Bridge (Drogba and Anelka, I guess, are just too good) and spent some time on loan at QPR and Sheffield Wednesday.

This season, the now nineteen year old was curiously loaned out to Portsmouth – where he had to compete for first team football with Peter Crouch, Kanu, and Jermain Defoe.

But just a few months ago, Sahar finally got the breakthrough he needed to get his career on track.

The Israeli striker joined Dutch side De Graafschap on loan in January and has scored 5 goals in 14 games. The 19 year old is now being linked with a permanent move away from Chelsea – with Dutch side Ajax and German side Borussia Dortmund leading the race.

He’s still a teenager with potential – so it will be interesting to see if Sahar does ever become the next “Benayoun.”
