What a “Shar” by Israel’s Atar: Europe’s Goal of the Season

February 8th, 2009 | By: Ibracadabra | 1 Comment »

Wow. What a hit, son. What a hit.

In Hebrew, a “shar” is a goal. So it’s no surprise that the Israeli announcer starts yelling at the top of his lungs “Eh-ze Shar!” (”What a goal!”) after this brilliant overhead kick by young Israeli Eliran Atar against my home town club, Maccabi Netanya.

Atar, 21, scored 3 goals in 6 appearances for Israel’s U-19 national team in 2006 but has yet to be called up to the Israeli national team. Perhaps this highlight will keep the young Bnei Yehuda striker top of mind. With 4 goals in his last 4 games in Israel’s top flight, the national team could use him next month as they take on Greece in two crucial World Cup 2010 qualifiers.

Have you seen a better “shar” in Europe this season? I think not.

What a hit indeed! Marco van Basten would be proud.
