Israel’s best scores the greatest club goal of his career. A Champions League away winner at Real Madrid. 1-0 Liverpool… Israeli football fans will hope that Yossi can carry his fine form into March’s crucial World Cup qualifiers with Greece as the nation’s 2010 qualification hopes will sink or swim with Captain Benayoun. Which got me thinking – are there any other major footballing countries that rely more on a single player than the Israeli national team? Where one man’s talent is so vastly superior to the rest of the team?

There are a couple more, but I can’t think of it off-hand. I remember that, after Nike’s ad campaign Jose+10, that’s what they called those teams. Israel, for example, would be Benayoun+10.
